Beach'N Buggy's HIGHLY recommends making sure both the condo/hotel and beach you are vacationing in are accessible. We have found numerous local places advertise as ADA compliant and fully accessible; however, that is only for the inside of the facility.
If you are unsure if our chairs will work at the place you are vacationing, please call us before booking; we are more than happy to check it out for you!
The following list is a recommendation of things you may wish to ask.
-Is there barrier-free beach access from the house/condo.
-Does the boardwalk to the beach begin or end in stairs?
-Will I need to cross dunes, and if so, what's the approximate incline?
-If there is a boardwalk, how wide is the boardwalk?
-If there is a boardwalk, are there arm rails or sides (no drop off)?
-Is there a steep ramp at the end or beginning of the boardwalk?
-Is there a covered area with electricity/plugin to recharge powered chairs?
The following is a list of recommended "barrier-free" places where our chairs have performed well (these suggestions are from previous chair performance and not necessarily the accessibility of the indoor facility).
Highly recommended:
Unit 803 will be one of the few specific units we mention; however, we know just how vital a roll-in shower can be. Also, we are always so delighted when someone takes the time and effort to create such an accessible unit. While not fully ADA compliant (due to association restrictions), it's pretty close.
1). Unit 803 @ Phoenix West II- the condo was recently modified and has a roll-in shower, widened doors, shower chair, ramp access to the balcony, and lift. Please get in touch with Beach Getaways or take a better look and book with this link. https://book.mybeachgetaways.com/resorts/phoenixwest-2/unit-803/
Our chairs work well at most Phoenix's in Orange Beach (I-X), Phoenix East I & II,
Phoenix West, Phoenix West II is highly recommended, and Phoenix X.
Phoenix Gulf Shores (the condo, not the hotel)- *we do not rent @ Phoenix All- Suites for more than one day (nowhere safe to keep chairs and plugin).
This is a unit that just became available near the end of Fort Morgan at Beach club. Bristol Tower, a 4-bedroom gulf front luxury condo, which is wheelchair accessible. This unit has an ADA compliant, handicap, primary ensuite. A custom ramp that allows wheelchair access from the living room to the 50 foot balcony! Sleeps 8 in beds, plus a sofa sleeper. Please use the following link to obtain more information or make a reservation.
Bristol 2005 - Pam Martin Beach Vacations
Turquoise both C & D buildings are accessible.
Also highly recommended are Phoenix Orange Beach I & II. Don't forget that newer facilities tend to have wider doors and larger elevators; you may want to inquire about the building age when deciding your vacation needs.
This list is by no means complete. Our power-chairs work at most places; however, many locations do not have plugins, lobbies for storing/safety, and many of the dunes down West Beach are not too steep to climb (plus, they are protected dunes). We can not stress enough to please call if you are less than 100% sure that your vacation spot- both inside and out to the beach- is accessible.
